This April 1, 2018, enhanced-color picture of Jupiter’s Nice Crimson Spot was captured by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. The picture is a mix of three separate pictures taken as Juno carried out its 12th shut flyby of the planet.
The Nice Crimson Spot, a swirling oval of clouds twice as large as Earth, has been noticed on the large planet for greater than 300 years. In 2021, findings from Juno confirmed that Jupiter’s storms are far taller than anticipated, with some extending 60 miles (100 kilometers) beneath the cloud tops and others, together with the Nice Crimson Spot, extending over 200 miles (350 kilometers).
Juno is a solar-powered spacecraft that spans the width of a basketball courtroom and makes lengthy, looping orbits round Jupiter. It seeks solutions to questions concerning the origin and evolution of Jupiter, our photo voltaic system, and large planets throughout the cosmos.
