Euro cash will boost green tourism on the Marsh

Group representatives at Dungeness
KENT NEWS:

Romney Marsh has been given a share of 400,000 euros to help promote green tourism and boost the local economy.

The scheme, designed by the Boulogne Shepway Cooperation Organisation (BOSCO) and other bodies, has been awarded the grant by the European Regional Development Fund.

Plans to make the Marsh better known include using cross-border media promotions, events and workshops for tourism staff, green-tourism fairs and activities to encourage school and holiday visits.

Reculver, near Herne Bay, and the Arena educational centre in Boulogne will also receive some of the cash.

Tourism, environmental and education representatives from both sides of the Channel attended a three-day event at venues across the Marsh earlier this month.

BOSCO manager Lynn Dockar said that during their stay the 26 visitors travelled on a specially-commissioned train on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, went to Dungeness nature reserve, toured ancient churches and attended seminars, workshops and presentations by experts.

Ms Dockar said: “Everybody who took part was confident that the scheme would create greater awareness of the unique natural and cultural attractions of the Marsh and thereby contribute to its economic prosperity and environmental well-being.

“Similar events are to be held at Arena in March and Reculver in May.”

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Lynne Beaumont said: “Many people have mixed feelings about being part of Europe, but here is a great example as to how this can benefit our area.

“In the minds of most people in Romney Marsh are jobs, the economy and questions on where is the money coming from. This cash injection will help invigorate the Marsh.

“It will encourage people to visit, spend their money in local shops and local restaurants and stay in local hotels and B&B accommodation.”
