Neil Cugley is hoping his Folkestone Invicta side can hang on at the top of the Ryman South long enough to take the title race into the final week of the season.
The Seasiders sit one point clear with 12 games remaining despite a 10-point deduction for going into administration last month. Second place Croydon Athletic have two games in hand but visit Cheriton Road on April 20, the penultimate game of the season.
Cugley hailed his small squad’s efforts so far but is keen to maintain the form long enough to at least set up a virtual title decider four days before the end of the season.
He said: “It’s in our own hands and that’s all you ask. What would be nice is if when Croydon come here it’s still in our hands, it would be a shame if we had got that far and they had got away from us. If we can stay in there until the last week that would be lovely. It’s been a hell of an achievement for us to be up here anyway in such a short space of time is a great credit to the players.”
Invicta made it four successive victories with a functional 1-0 win against Eastbourne Town on Tuesday night. Cugley felt after seven straight away games his side struggled to adapt to playing at home.
He said: “I’m pleased we won by I thought our standards weren’t very good. I think we got so used to playing away, it’s alright trying to pick teams off but at home you’ve got to have a bit more about yourselves further up the pitch.
“They’re trying to stay up and give them some credit I thought at times they weren’t bad. It’s just one area which has been a problem at the club to make ourselves a bit more exciting in the final third. How you do it I don’t know with the staff and players we’ve got.”
